Permanent Magnetic Filter Use

A company specializing in the production of intravenous generic drugs and infusion solutions has commissioned us to design a magnetic filtration device. The glucose solution produced by the company is administered intravenously to patients. Permanent magnetic filter are ideal for this purpose

Challenge

Chemical analysis has shown that the glucose solution contains a certain amount of iron particles, which is not acceptable. These metal particles come from wear in the glucose delivery pipelines, specifically micron-sized iron contaminants.

The goal is to remove these particles. Given the strict hygiene standards in pharmaceutical production, the magnetic separator must be made of stainless steel.

The glucose solution is transported through a 200 mm diameter pipeline, with a maximum throughput capacity of 230 cubic meters per hour.

Additionally, the glucose solution temperature may reach up to 150°C.

Strategy

We installed the pipeline magnetic separator in the DN200 pipeline before the glucose mixer. The following conditions must be met:

  • Separate iron particles as small as 1 micron.
  • The magnets in the separator must be capable of withstanding temperatures up to 150°C.
  • Design a separator that can handle the required throughput capacity.
  • All components of the separator must be made of stainless steel.

Given the high temperature of the material, we selected neodymium magnets that can withstand temperatures up to 150°C (with complete insulation measures to maintain material temperature). It’s worth noting that we can also provide double-walled (jacketed) versions of the magnetic filters, but the client did not request this solution (jacketed filters are typically used in heated pipeline applications where temperature is crucial for controlling product viscosity, such as preventing the solidification of clean products like chocolate, syrups, jams, and sauces).

Since the iron magnetic particle contamination is not severe (only a few grams of iron dust are separated during an hour of operation), using a magnetic trap with manual cleaning is sufficient.

Benefits of the Magnetic Filter:

  • The installation of the pipeline magnetic separator ensures the effective removal of iron contaminants.
  • A few grams of iron particles are captured during an hour of operation, and the client is satisfied with the magnetic separation results.
  • The final product meets quality standards and is suitable for pharmaceutical production.

Highlights of the Magnetic Filter:

  • 5-year warranty
  • Lightweight, easy to operate
  • Neodymium magnets with an induction strength of up to 13,500 G
  • Budget-friendly version
  • Standard design capable of withstanding 10 bar pressure
  • Captures iron particles as small as 1 micron
  • Quick and easy cleaning
  • Replaceable magnetic rods
  • Double-sleeve protection for magnets

This solution successfully removes iron contaminants from the glucose solution using efficient magnetic filtration technology, ensuring product quality and compliance with the hygiene standards required for pharmaceutical production.
